Spiral studies is the foundation of Contact Improvisation (CI). The impulse of CI follows the point of contact between moving bodies. As the point of contact traverses the surfaces of bodies, acting as a vortex, it pulls bodies along.

“Obeying physical extra-volitional impulses such as gravity or inertia, and both partners organize their bodies around the movement of that point (rather than trying to subordinate the movement of the point to conscious choices) - we get contact improvisation - continuous following of an uncontrollable impulse. In this way, both partners are not dancing with each other, but with a third something that is out of control and turns their dance into a constant improvisation.” -Yu Gen, Georgian CI festival facilitator
